University Veterinarian Specialists is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Laurie Bergman, VMD, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Behaviorists to our staff. Dr. Bergman is a board certified veterinary behavior specialist, and one of less than 70 Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists worldwide.

Dr. Laurie Bergman grew up in Northern New Jersey and received her undergraduate degree in biology from Columbia University in New York City. After graduating from Veterinary School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 she lived on Cape Cod. During this time she worked in small animal practice and completed an internship in Wildlife Medicine at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine before being hired to work for a veterinary behavior practice.

In 2000, Dr. Bergman moved to California to enter a residency program in Clinical Animal Behavior at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Bergman has been Board Certified in Veterinary Behavior since 2003. Dr. Bergman remained in California for three years as the Behavior Service Coordinator for the University of California Veterinary Medical Center- San Diego where, in addition to treating behavior problems in companion dogs, cats, and birds, she consulted for local animal shelters and the San Diego Zoological Society, was involved in a variety of clinical research projects, and trained residents and veterinary students.

Dr. Bergman returned to the East Coast in 2008 where she has been in private behavior practice in the Philadelphia area.  She continues to be active in the profession writing for journals and veterinary texts, presenting at national conferences, and helping train veterinary students and residents in behavior.  Dr. Bergman is also a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network, an online community for veterinarians.

She has competed in agility with her Australian Terriers and has trained other species, such as birds and cats, none of whom have been as challenging as her two children.
